《尼采》、《习作》和《雇佣兵》这三幅油画作品很有特色，成为画家如何统一造型与明暗的精彩范例。画面所呈现的质感是一座雕塑头像，也是所有学习古典写实主义绘画的初学者都颇为熟悉的古典石膏像。不过，我觉得，“石膏”这一质感在这里只能算作是一种视觉隐喻，因为画家表现的并不是石膏，而是对典型人物的一种向往，一种对崇高哲思的体认。

       ···由是，我恍然大悟，对于杜华林来说，他在作品中所营造的质感，正是承载着内心长久驻守的历史执念的语言载体。我知道，那是一只伸向时间的无形之手，对于画家来说，在这样的无形之手的触摸下，历史与质地成为整体。
